GOP Legislators Propose Constitutional Amendment to Eliminate SC Legislature
Reps. Garry Smith and Alan Clemmons want to replace legislature with corporate lobbyists

(COLUMBIA, SC)—Today, April 1, Reps. Garry Smith (R, Greenville) and Alan Clemmons (R, Horry) introduced a proposal to eliminate the South Carolina Senate and House of Representatives and replace it with the leadership of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

When asked why they were proposing this major change, Rep. Smith said, “ALEC practically runs this place now, we’re just cutting out the middle man.”

“ALEC already writes legislation for us,” added Rep. Clemmons.  “Our proposal just lets them also implement what they write.  We don’t usually understand, or even read, what we introduce.  This will just make our lives easier.”

ALEC is a corporate pay-to-play “bill mill” that brings state legislators and corporate lobbyists together at resorts to co-write legislation behind closed doors.  This legislation is often introduced word-for-word by legislators when they get back home.

When asked how his Democratic colleagues will respond, Rep. Smith replied, “They probably won’t event notice.”
